Mustang GTD Spirit of America Steals the Show at Detroit Auto Extravaganza

DETROIT, January 10, 2024 ~ The Detroit Auto Show roared to life this week with the electrifying debut of the Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America, a car that the automaker says embodies the essence of American ingenuity and speed. This special edition Mustang, with its striking red, white, and blue livery, pays homage to the legendary Craig Breedlove and his record-breaking Spirit of America vehicles.

January 10, 2025 ~ The Detroit Auto Show kicked off with Ford Motor Company revealing a special edition of the Mustang GTD Spirits of America muscle car. Guy, Lloyd, and Jamie talk with Mustang Brand Manager Jim Owens about the exciting night with Lions quarterback Jared Goff, plus the surprise announcement of the Mustang RTR.


(CONTINUED) Craig Breedlove, born in March of 1937, was a renowned American race car driver who set the world land speed record five times. He made history as the first person to break the 500 mph (800 km/h) and 600 mph (970 km/h) speed barriers, achieving these feats with his series of turbojet-powered cars, all aptly named Spirit of America.

Mustang Brand Manager Jim Owens, had the honor of driving this powerhouse onto the stage, a moment he described as “a lot of pressure” due to the car’s immense power and the slick Huntington show floor. “This car represents the spirit of American ingenuity,” Owens said on “JR Morning with Guy Gordon, Lloyd Jackson, and Jamie Edmonds,” highlighting the car’s connection to automotive history.

(CONTINUED) The Mustang RTR also debut last night, impressing attendees with its performance and design. Developed with Vaughn Gittin Jr.‘s RTR Vehicles, this turbocharged EcoBoost Mustang features custom enhancements like Hyper Lime Brembo brakes and an Electronic Drift Brake. Vaughn Gittin Jr. showcased the car’s drift capabilities, highlighting its appeal to track enthusiasts and performance drivers.

Both the Mustang GTD and RTR will be on display at the Detroit Auto Show, which runs January 11 through 20 inside Detroit’s Huntington Place.
