Pope Francis Names New Detroit Archbishop

DETROIT, Feb. 11, 2025 ~ Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Edward J. Weisenburger, currently the bishop of the Diocese of Tucson, as the sixth Archbishop of Detroit.

The new archbishop-elect succeeds Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, who has served the archdiocese in Detroit since 2009, and submitted his resignation when he turned 75 on Oct. 21, 2023. The new archbishop will be installed at a ceremony at 2:00 p.m., March 18 at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. He will oversee Michigan’s largest Catholic diocese, comprising of more than 900,000 Catholics and 213 parishes.
