PLYMOUTH, MI, March 17, 2025 ~ For the 40th time, WJR brought dozens of Detroit-area business, civic, and political leaders on the air to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Paul W. Smith‘s annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration took place Monday at Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth, featuring live music performances and a rowdy atmosphere to celebrate the holiday. The annual broadcast first began in 1985, with the event going strong for the past 40 years.

WJR’s first St. Patrick’s Day broadcast was a small gathering of a dozen or so guests hosted in the Fisher Building lobby by legendary broadcaster J.P. McCarthy. From those roots, this event has become one of Detroit’s traditional St. Patrick’s Day kick-offs, with as many as several thousand guests each year.
