Sterling Heights Planning Commission votes down mosque

Update: the  commission voted 9-0 Thursday night to reject building a mosque on 15 Mile between Ryan and Mound roads.

A proposed mosque in Sterling Heights has raised a storm of controversy. Supporters want to build a mosque located off of 15 Mile between Hatherly Place and Davison. The area is zoned single-family residential and those in favor are seeking a special land-use provision. Critics say it would cause traffic problems and lower property values.  Activists claim the opposition is nothing more than anti-Muslim. The Sterling Heights Planning Commission is expected to decide the issue at a meeting Thursday night.
