Authority over Detroit Police is expected to revert back to the civilian Board of Police Commissioners. Detroit City Council is poised to vote to restore authority to the civilian board, which was stripped of it’s power over the police department by the former Emergency Manager, Kevin Orr.
The Board of Police Commissioners was established under Mayor Coleman Young in 1974.
