UAW gives Chrysler formal notice of strike deadline

The United Auto Workers union has provided Fiat Chrysler with formal notice of a strike deadline.

A key UAW local in northern Indiana has put up strike notices inside the plant. UAW Local 1166, which represents workers at the Kokomo Casting Plant in Kokomo, Ind., posted notifications in the plant informing workers of a “strike deadline” at 11:59 p.m. EDT Wednesday.

The UAW notified the company that it was canceling its national and local contract extensions at the same time. The notice was posted on the UAW website today. FCA issued a statement confirming it had received the strike notification from the union.

It was unclear if any other FCA plants have been targeted. The plant casts aluminum automotive components, including transmission and transaxle cases. A general strike could shut down all 40,000 hourly workers at FCA, but the union could act strategically and save expenses from its strike fund. Workers laid off would get unemployment benefits, and the workers at the striking plant would be the only ones getting strike benefits.
