More than 6,000 federal prisoners are being released and approximately 80 of those prisoners are being released here in Michigan. According to the United States Justice Department, the inmates received excessive sentences for drug convictions. Last year, maximum sentencing for drug offenders was decreased and the change is retroactive for previous offenses. The prisoner release is the largest in U.S. history. Not all of the prisoners will be released at once.
