Protests in Chicago as dash-cam shows murder of black teenager

Chicago protesting November 2015

There’s protesting in Chicago after a dash-cam release shows the graphic murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by police officer Jason VanDyke. The incident occurred last October and the Cook County prosecutors charged VanDyke with first-degree murder on Tuesday.  Cook County’s State Attorney, Anita Alvarez, said VanDyke, who is white, had only been on the scene for less than 30 seconds before he started shooting at the black teenager. Protesters blocked a freeway in Chicago, making known their outrage over the killing of McDonald. They stood in the street chanting and raising their hands in the air in a show of civil disobedience. The situation got physical at times, with pushing and shoving as the crowds of protesters met the police line. At one point, demonstrators stood together and linked their arms in a giant ring, completely blocking an intersection. At another intersection, a mass of people followed as a handful of protesters scuffled with law enforcement. VanDyke’s attorney maintains his client was acting in self-defense, in fear for his life and for the lives of his fellow officers.
