Dr. Rafaai Hamo

Syrian refugee Dr. Refaai Hamo, also known as “The Scientist,” and his four children arrived in Detroit last night. Hamo and children came from Istanbul, Turkey waiting for admission to a new home. Their story was featured on the Facebook page “Humans of New York” and reached millions of people. The story has even received attention from President Obama and actor Ed Norton. Hamo lost his wife and a daughter to a bomb in Syria’s civil war and Hamo reportedly suffers from stomach cancer but was unable to receive treatment as a refugee in Turkey. The family was resettled by Lutheran Social Services of Michigan and will be moving into a house in Troy.
