Charles Pugh has to pay

U.S. District Judge David Lawson ordered Charles Pugh to pay $250,000 to a former student who accused him of sexual harassment. Pugh’s attorney told the judge that he shouldn’t have to fork over anything. Lawson issued the ruling in one of two decisions that sided with the plaintiff in a case that made national headlines. Pugh’s attorney, Marc Deldin, said in court filings his client shouldn’t have to pay the victim because Detroit Public Schools had already agreed to give him $350,000 as part of a settlement. He argued that Pugh’s accuser is legally entitled to only one award. A jury on November 9th ordered Pugh to pay $250,000 to the plaintiff, who sued both Pugh and Detroit Public Schools on allegations that Pugh sexually pursued him during a mentorship program at Frederick Douglass Academy while school district officials ignored it. The jury ruled in favor of the man on his claims of emotional distress and battery, but it cleared Pugh on a third claim of sexual harassment. Lawson also ruled that if DPS fails to pay the full $350,000 by November 1, 2016, the victim can seek the money not just from the school district, but also the individual defendants: former DPS emergency managers Robert Bobb and Roy Roberts along with school administrators Berry Greer and Monique McMurty.
