Gender and sexual orientation rights petition in play for Michigan’s constitution

Supporters for amending Michigan’s constitution to prohibit discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity say they will begin circulating petitions shortly. The group, Fair Michigan, must gather about 315,000 valid voter signatures to put the measure on the November 2016 statewide ballot. They have until July 11th to gather the required signatures. The state constitution currently bars discrimination because of religion, race, color, or national origin. The amendment would add gender, gender identity, sex, and sexual orientation protections.

The Detroit Free Press reports the gay community is divided on its stance to gather signatures for the petition. Executive Director of Equality Michigan Stephanie White said she believes “there isn’t a path to win in 2016 at the ballot box” because of hate speech and violence that escalates during campaigning on election years. Additionally, politicians are hesitant in their support for fear their support will cause them to loose the election.
