Service dogs allowed in Michigan public buildings

Service dog

People with disabilities who need to use a service dog will soon find it easier to get into public places. A new law will take effect on Monday that will allow veterans or others with disabilities who use service animals to apply for a Michigan State I.D. and a patch to affix to their animals vests. The I.D. will prove that the users are recognized as legal owners of service dogs and that the animals must be granted access to buildings. The new law also requires the state to take reports from people who encounter problems using a service animal or who suspect others who falsely say they have a service animal. Law enforcement officials will investigate reports received.
