Coalition Recommends State Take on Detroit Schools Debt, Create City Education Commission

LANSING — The community-led coalition that’s been working on Detroit education reform proposals for the last three months released their ideas for Gov. Rick Snyder on Monday, with the state assuming Detroit Public Schools’ debt among them.

The Coalition for the Future of Detroit School Children also called on the state to return Detroit Public Schools to elected school board control and end the Education Achievement Authority. The group also said Detroit needs a common enrollment system and a citywide schools governance system called the Detroit Education Commission. In a press conference Monday, coalition leaders emphasized that the recommendations are the beginning of a “new era” in Detroit. Rev. Wendell Anthony, co-chair of the coalition and president of the Detroit branch of the NAACP, said the recommendations might not be perfect, but they will be a good start for Detroit’s children. MORE
