Five men who died in Novi fire were in U.S. illegally

All five of the men who died in a weekend house fire in Novi have been identified. Police say all of the men, ages 16 to 23, were from Mexico and in the United States illegally. All five died from soot and smoke inhalation in the basement of the home. Police say the fire started in a mattress, possibly by a careless smoker. Public Safety Director David Molloy said there is a “broad and ongoing investigation” into the deaths. He did not rule out possible criminal charges, saying the department wasn’t ruling out the possibility of human trafficking.
