Detroit may restrict strip shopping centers

Strip Mall

Detroit leaders are looking to restrict strip shopping centers. The primary area of concern regarding the new zoning is bordered by Hancock Street to the north, Woodward Avenue to the east, Charlotte Street to the south, and the Lodge Freeway to the west. As the Woodward Avenue development moves west, the Cass Corridor will become dramatically different. Single level retailers with a parking lot and basic strip malls may be banned. The new zoning would emphasize walkable blocks with multi-level retail and residential buildings.
