Snyder replaces former emergency manager with Judge Steven Rhodes

Judge Steven Rhodes

Governor Rick Snyder is bringing retired bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes to run the Detroit Public Schools. Rhodes replaces former Emergency Manager Darnell Earley. Rhodes will not be called an emergency manager: the new title for the position is transition manager. Rhodes will be responsible for most of the duties previously assigned to Earley. He will assume his new position on Monday. The governor expects an appointed school board to take over in July until a board elected in November can take over January 1. Before the new board can take over, lawmakers will need to pass the governor’s Detroit education restructuring package.
