Ford layoffs at the plant where Obama touted auto’s comeback

DETROIT, MI – Ford Motor Co.’s layoffs announced this week are coming at the same auto plant President Barack Obama visited earlier this year to tout the U.S. industry’s comeback. Obama visited the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne

“This state proves that no matter how tough things get, Americans are tougher,” Obama told workers at the plant during the visit.

Ford is shutting down a shift at the plant as sales of small, electric and hybrid vehicles flounder. Low gas prices and heightened interest in light trucks, including SUVs, are cited for the dip in gas-sipping cars. In all, 673 line workers and 27 salaried employees are facing layoffs on June 22.
