TAMPA, Fla. – The fast, high-powered Tampa Bay Lightning had little room to skate and not many opportunities to shoot through two periods Saturday.
And, despite picking up the pace in the third period, they had no comeback in them this time.
The Detroit Red Wings turned in a strong team effort and Petr Mrazek made 28 saves in a 4-0 victory over the Lightning in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal playoff series at Amalie Arena.
The Red Wings lead the first-round series 3-2 and can wrap it up Monday at Joe Louis Arena.
It was Mrazek’s second shutout in three games. He tied Harry Lumley (1945 final vs. Toronto) and Earl Robertson (1937 final vs. the New York Rangers) for the most shutouts by a Detroit rookie goalie in a playoff series.
Riley Sheahan and Pavel Datsyuk scored power-play goals, Drew Miller scored at even strength and Danny DeKeyser scored into an empty net for Detroit. Jonathan Ericsson chipped in a pair of assists. MORE
