Poll: Michigan roads Proposal 1 ‘on life support’ in run up to May 5 election

LANSING, MI — With Michigan’s May 5 election just days away, a new poll suggests that only 29 percent of likely voters support Proposal 1, a complex plan designed to produce a long-term funding bump for road and bridge repairs.

The EPIC-MRA survey of 600 likely voters, conducted April 25 through 28, showed a slight increase in support for the ballot measure since March but indicated that a clear majority of likely voters remain opposed.

Sixty-one percent of respondents said they would vote “no” if the election were held that day, while 10 percent were undecided. Among very certain voters, 64 percent were opposed.

“The proposal is obviously on life support,” said Bernie Porn, president of EPIC-MRA, a Lansing-based polling firm. “They have a very high hill to climb, and they have a very short time in which to do it.”

Among likely “no” voters, 31 percent said their main reason is that there’s “too much in the proposal.” Another 22 percent said taxes were too high, and 13 percent pointed to wasteful government spending.

For those planning to vote “yes,” 53 percent said their main reason was that road repairs are needed. Another 16 percent cited education funding.
