Bus driver who fell asleep at wheel gets three months in jail for West Bloomfield crash

WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI — A man accused of causing a serious bus crash last year by falling asleep at the wheel was sentenced to more than three months behind bars Monday.

Judge Kimberly Small of 48th District Court in Oakland County sentenced 66-year-old retired bus driver Leon Rasheed to 93 days in jail, according to reports from WDIV and WXYZ.

Rasheed was charged with a moving violation causing serious impairment of body function, which carries a maximum 93-day sentence.

The crash was captured on video, showing Rasheed seated still with one hand on the wheel at the wheel before jerking upward in his set and trying desperately to regain control of the SMART bus as it collides with several vehicles.

The bus was carrying one passenger. Two other people were seriously injured in the crash.
