The statewide vote totals listed here reflect counties that have submitted complete results to the state, a process that may take time.

Also included are more immediate results from select Michigan counties, as reported by clerks.

Polls will stay open one hour longer — until 9 p.m. Eastern time — in four western Upper Peninsula counties that are in the Central time zone.

Proposal 1, backed by Gov. Rick Snyder and bipartisan legislative leaders, would raise the state sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent but exempt fuel.

Approval would trigger a series of laws to create new and higher wholesale fuel taxes, eliminate registration fee discounts, raise rates on trucks, expand the Earned Income Tax Credit and more.

The package is projected to generate $1.25 billion a year for roads once fully implemented, along with a combined $600 million a year for schools, cities, mass transit and the state’s general fund.

Recent public opinion polls suggest that the proposal is likely to fail, but Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder remained optimistic as he cast his own ballot on Tuesday.
