Decomposing body found near Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor

No foul play is suspected in the death of a man found near Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, police said.

Ann Arbor Police Department Detective Lt. Robert Pfannes said although an official identification has not been made, police believe the individual is 53-year-old man.

An autopsy will be needed to determine the official cause of death; however, initial police investigation does not indicate foul play, Pfannes said.

The man was found by contractors at the site Thursday afternoon.

Mike Appel Environmental Design contractors were preparing for a controlled burn on Ann Arbor schools property when they found the body, the school district said. The body appeared to have been there for some time, Superintendent Jeanice Swift wrote in an email to the Pioneer school community Thursday afternoon.

Pioneer Woods Park Steward Jim Rogers said he was in the area to observe the controlled burn when he heard that a body had been found at about 1 p.m. May 7 close to where prairie grasses are growing at the corner of Main Street and Scio Church Road.

Early indications are the man was homeless and had been camping at the location in a swampy, remote area of Pioneer Woods, south of the school, Pfannes said.
