ABOUT THE HOST:
PAUL W. SMITH
If you’ve ever tuned into Detroit’s airwaves, chances are you’ve been greeted by the warm, engaging voice of Paul W. Smith. Known for his conversational style and knack for making listeners feel like they’re part of the discussion, Paul has been a staple of Detroit radio for decades. Born in Monroe, Michigan, Paul’s journey to becoming the “king of talk radio in Detroit” is as dynamic as his on-air personality.
Paul’s career took off in Toledo, Ohio, where he honed his skills in both radio and television. His talent soon led him to the bustling media scene of New York City, and later to Philadelphia. But it was in 1996, when he took over the morning show on WJR in Detroit, that Paul truly found his home. Following the legendary J.P. McCarthy, Paul quickly made the show his own, bringing in-depth interviews with everyone from local leaders to U.S. presidents, and earning a loyal following along the way.
In June 2023, Paul made a significant shift from his early morning slot to a midday show, allowing him to focus more on local programming and enjoy a bit more sleep. Despite the change, his influence and presence on Detroit radio remain as strong as ever. Whether he’s interviewing a high-profile guest or discussing local events, Paul W. Smith continues to be a beloved voice in Detroit, connecting with listeners and making mornings (and now middays) a bit brighter.
